So I made two promises to myself this year. The first was to have an adventure a week, and by adventure I mean some sort of escapade that will serve for a good story the day after. The second was to stay in touch more with friends and family. We all get caught up in our own worlds and it is hard to keep everyone in the loop. Hopefully this can be accomplished with this "blog".
My Wednesday evening was spent in the traditional way in Barrigan's, a half-Irish half-Mexican restaurant which caters to the hipster throngs on Wednesday's with their cheap, sugary and pungent margharitas.
I was introduced to two characters from Inglewood named Jerk and Noiz respectively. They were rappers who had been caught in the unfortunate position of booking an unplugged gig the following evening without any musicians to speak of whatsoever. They were desperate, which explains why they asked Romero and I to play with them. They gave us their cd, entitled "The Heart of a Champion" and retired back to Inglewood. Apparently, Jerk had to get up early to film some sort of colon cleansing infomercial.
We met up for 20 minutes on Thursday before the gig and rehearsed. They brought with them a female singer who introduced herself as Mirage. I felt a little silly for not having a suitable hip-hop moniker and having to introduce myself as Toby, perhaps Toby40 should be resurrected. I'm of course open to any suggestions.
The show surprisingly went quite well. One of their tracks contained the charming couplet: "Shorty got me high like an airport. Shorty got my back like a Jansport." Genius.
All 5 people in the crowd roared their approval and the lads invited us to join their band.
Perhaps this will be the adventure that keeps on giving.
